Susan Gilbreath, Ph.D.

Dr. Susan Gilbreath is an environmental epidemiologist based in Davis, CA. She spent several years in nursing before transitioning to a career researching and communicating health risks and effects related environmental exposures to vulnerable populations. She began with Zender Environmental Health and Research Group as a senior scientist in 2000 where she examined a variety of adverse health effects primarily in residents of Alaska Native Villages associated with solid waste and disposal. She performed similar work with Native American Tribes in the contiguous United States. She later joined the California Air Resources Board where she helped oversee worldwide projects in addition to developed an in-house epidemiology program related to health effects associated with air pollution. Areas of special interest include unusual  pollution event effects, issues related to woodsmoke, and risk exercise proximal to traffic pollution.  She has belonged to numerous professional associations, contributed to multiple scientific, technical, and government publications and given dozens of presentations to professional and lay audiences. Her degrees include a B.S. degree in biology and an M.S. degree in ecology from San Jose State  University, and a Ph.D. in epidemiology from the University of California, Davis.  She enjoys riding a bicycle and spending time with her dog.
